Liam Gallagher 'in Britain's wittiest poll'

Liam Gallagher has been named alongside Oscar Wilde, Shakespeare and Margaret Thatcher as one of Britain's wittiest people.

The Oasis singer came tenth in the poll, which was based on the votes of 3,000 comedy fans, and is one of only four in the Top 10 to still be alive.

Liam has been rewarded for more than a decade of cheeky put downs and sharp observations, putting him in exalted company.

Speaking once of Victoria Beckham, he commented: "She can't even chew gum and walk in a straight line, let alone write a book."

He also once said: "Americans want grungy people, stabbing themselves in the head on stage. They get a bright bunch like us, with deodorant on. They don't get it."

The Top 10 for the poll is as follows:

01 Oscar Wilde
02 Spike Milligan
03 Stephen Fry
04 Jeremy Clarkson
05 Sir Winston Churchill
06 Paul Merton
07 Noel Coward
08 William Shakespeare
09 Brian Clough
10 Liam Gallagher

Oasis release a new single, "Lord Don't Slow Me Down", on Monday as a download-only.
